Kilbride Campsite

A white shell-sand beach lies just across the road from Kilbride Campsite, on South Uist’s southern shore overlooking the Sound of Barra. This small, open-field site welcomes tents, campervans and dogs, with a toilet and shower block for the practical side of a stay. Its position on the Hebridean Way makes it a useful stopping point for walkers and cyclists, while visitors touring by car can settle here to explore the southern end of the island. Next door, Kilbride Café offers lunch and hot chocolate, and the beach is accessible on foot from the campsite.

Exploring this part of South Uist brings more white-sand coves and a chance to see the prehistoric standing stone at Polochar, set beside the shore. Eriskay, connected to South Uist by a road causeway, offers another island to explore without taking a ferry. Its Coilleag a’ Phrionnsa beach is where Bonnie Prince Charlie first landed in Scotland in July 1745.

For a longer outing on foot, the Eriskay Walk starts at the community centre beside the island shop, rather than at the campsite. The route takes in Prince’s Strand, Acarsaid harbour and higher ground overlooking the surrounding islands. It offers a more varied day’s walking alongside the simpler option of spending time on the shell sands opposite Kilbride.
