Best Beach Campsites In Scotland

Scotland has so many great beachside campsites and if you are blessed with nice weather you might just feel like you have been transported to a tropical Caribbean Island. Some of the best beaches in Scotland can be found on the Hebridian Islands and the west coast of the mainland, in particular, the Highlands. But there are also some great beaches located in Ayreshire, Abedeenshire and the east coast north of Inverness so make sure you use the map at the bottom to explore all of what Scotland has to offer.

With so many great beachside campsites in Scotland it can be hard to pick a top six! These campsites are not only situated on stunning sandy beaches but also in some of the most incredible locations in Scotland. From the remote Island of Vatersay to the secluded mainland village of Knoydart all of these campsites offer great beaches, wild swimming & stunning surroundings and should be on everyones Scottish campsites bucket list.

Family run informal campsite located on one of Britain’s best beaches where pitches are all on flat grass with no set pitches giving a more informal laid back feel. The site has a toilet, shower block and an onsite fish and chip takeaway serving local produce. There is also a small shop selling essentials located onsite. Bonfires are not permitted however BBQ’s and fire pits are permitted so long as they are raised of the ground. Please note this site operates a strict NO DOG’S policy and anyone turning up with a dog will be turned away. The local beach is perfect for water sports including wild swimming, there are plenty of coastal walks nearby with additional sandy beaches dotted along the coastline.

Clachtoll Beach Campsite is a quiet family run touring caravan and camping site in Sutherland, in the North West of Scotland. It’s beach is made of golden sands with wooden walkways through the dunes leading to the safe shallow beach. Along with the geological wonder of Split Rock it is a truly stunning location with stunning surroundings. The beach is one of a select few on the award winning snorkel trail hosted by the Scottish Wildlife Trusts with a clarity of water that has to be experienced to be believed.  It is also on the whale and dolphin trail as well as sitting directly on the North Coast 500 route.

Campsite on a grass pitch next to Vatersay hall (carpark for campervans), this site is run by the local community where there is a toilet block and shower facilities available for use. The café sells food and drink and site is next to the stunning beaches of Vatersay. Payment is taken on arrival at the hall and no pre-booking is required. To get to Vatersay you first have to get to Barra and then drive across the causeway.

Sango Sands is a popular campsite for those on the NC500 and it is easy to see why! Located on the cliff tops above award winning beaches, Sango Sands Oasis Camping and Caravan site provides amazing sea views on the North-West tip of Scotland in the village of Durness. Beside the campsite you will also find the Oasis restaurant and bar where you can get a food and a dram whilst enjoying the stunning views (you may even see some Dolphins). There is plenty to do nearby from wild swimming, surfing, zip wiring, sea life spotting or just quiet walks. The site caters for tents and Campervans with electrical hook up requiring pre-booked, smaller non-electric pitches are on a first come first serve basis.

Assessable only by boat from Mallaig or by hiking overland for 2 days the Knoydart Long Beach campsite is worth the effort. One of those bucket list campsites for adventurers where you will be greeted by a swimmable beach, incredible Jurassic park style surroundings and a lovely small village with a pub and restaurants. Base yourself here for a couple of days to hike the local hills or spend a couple relaxing days after the hard hike in. This is one of our top 10 campsites in Scotland.
