Vatersay Camping
Quick Read Campsite Summary
Vatersay Camping offers a small-scale coastal stay beside the island’s community hall, reached by driving south from Barra across the causeway. There are strictly limited spaces for campervans and motorhomes, alongside an area for tents, with payment through an on-site honesty box rather than advance booking. Facilities include a water tap and an accessible toilet in the hall, open 24 hours. The volunteer-run community hall café serves teas, locally made scones, cakes and snacks. Dogs are welcome.
Careful parking matters here: vehicles must use the clearly designated camping areas, and overnight parking is not permitted in the hall and café car park. Verges, beaches and grazing land should be left clear to protect fragile ground and livestock. There is no chemical-waste disposal at the campsite; visitors should use the facility at Eoligarry on Barra.
The hall stands at the northern end of the narrow strip of land between Vatersay’s east and west beaches, making the coast a natural focus for a stay. For a longer outing, the 6.75km Vatersay beaches circuit starts at the hall and explores the island’s southern half, linking sands, machair, an Iron Age fort and traces of the deserted settlement of Eorisdale. Some sections are pathless and cross grazing croftland, so dogs need close control. At Tràigh Siar, the Annie Jane monument commemorates the emigrant ship wrecked in 1853—a reminder of the island’s maritime history amid the dunes and coastal grassland.
