Borve Camping & Caravan Site

Borve Camping & Caravan Site is a small coastal campsite on the west side of Barra, with open-field pitches for tents and campervans beside a pebble beach. Modern facilities include toilets, showers and electric hook-ups, and dogs and visitors of all ages are welcome. The west-facing setting gives scope for sunset watching when the weather cooperates, while a white-sand beach lies around 300 metres away. The site is open all year, with bookings handled by phone or email.

Walking here can combine coastal scenery with traces of Barra’s long history. At Tangasdale, a waymarked route begins opposite the telephone kiosk and leads past Loch Tangasdale towards Dùn Bàn, an Iron Age fortification on a rocky headland. Along the way are views of MacLeod’s Tower in the loch and the remains of an old settlement. This is a separate outing rather than a route starting at the campsite. For longer-distance plans, the Hebridean Way has distinct walking and cycling routes through Barra as part of its journey north through the islands.

Castlebay offers a useful change of pace, including Bùth Bharraigh, a community shop selling produce and crafts from Barra and Vatersay. Elsewhere on the island, Heaval is Barra’s highest hill, with the white marble Our Lady of the Sea statue on its slopes and views towards neighbouring islands.
