Gleanndal Campsite South Uist
Quick Read Campsite Summary
Gleanndal Campsite South Uist offers a small-scale, semi-wild camping experience in the grounds of a hostel and bunkhouse. Tent pitches occupy level ground with views across the loch, while a small number of gravel hardstanding pitches cater for campervans and have electric hook-ups. The camping area has its own small toilet and shower building, separate from the hostel, and campers can use the hostel’s small kitchen. Dogs are welcome, and bookings are handled by telephone or email.
Daliburgh and Lochboisdale are a few miles away for practical essentials, including shops, places to eat and fuel. The western shore’s white sandy beaches are around two miles from the campsite, backed by machair grassland with wildflowers and birdlife. For an outing elsewhere on South Uist, Kildonan Beach and Machair combines shell-rich white sand with grassland running parallel to the shore. Summer flowers here include orchids, while the habitat supports birds such as the elusive corncrake; sightings should be treated as a possibility rather than an expectation.
Kildonan Museum offers a different perspective on the island through artefacts, stories and photographs exploring South Uist’s history. It stands on the island’s main road, north of Daliburgh, making it an option to include when exploring beyond the campsite and the southern villages.
