Barra Holidays @croft 183 is a small, semi-wild campsite on the Isle of Barra, a short drive from Castlebay. Its ten pitches are divided between five grass spaces for tents and five hardstanding campervan pitches, with electric hook-up available for both. An amenity building houses a toilet, shower, laundrette and shared kitchen equipped with a cooker, microwave and kettle, giving campers practical comforts without the scale of a larger holiday park. Dogs are welcome.

The local bus service runs past the site, connecting it with Castlebay and its ferry port; a pick-up and drop-off service is also available for visitors travelling without a car. Clear weather can bring far-reaching views towards Skye and the Small Isles. Wildlife worth watching for in the surrounding area includes seals, otters and birds of prey, though sightings naturally depend on season and conditions.

For walking days, the Hebridean Way’s opening section runs from Vatersay to Northbay on Barra, offering an introduction to the southern islands without committing to the full long-distance route. Heaval, Barra’s highest hill at 383 metres, is another option, with views south over Castlebay and a statue of the Virgin and Child below its summit. In Castlebay itself, the Herring Walk uses interpretation displays to tell the story of the island’s fishing industry. Further exploration could take in Cille Bharra at Eoligarry, where the remains of a medieval church add a different perspective on Barra’s history.
