Wavecrest Campsite occupies a grassy stretch of Barra’s west coast, with a rocky shore beside the pitches and a white sandy beach around 400 metres away. The small site welcomes tents and campervans, with a large, flat grass area, electric hook-ups, toilets and showers. Dogs and visitors of all ages are welcome. Its coastal setting is a defining part of a stay here, with open Atlantic views and the chance of sunsets over the sea.

For exploring Barra, Castlebay offers shops and places to eat, along with the distinctive sight of Kisimul Castle standing on a rocky islet offshore. Cyclists can follow the Barra section of the Hebridean Way along the island’s west coast: the route comes over the causeway from Vatersay before continuing towards the ferry at Ardmhor. A separate walking route also begins on Vatersay and crosses Barra, giving walkers scope to sample part of the longer island journey without committing to the whole trail.

Vatersay is worth exploring in its own right, with white sand beaches on either side of a narrow strip of land and machair grassland bordering the shore. Its Annie Jane Monument commemorates the emigrant ship wrecked in 1853, adding a poignant historical stop to a beach outing. Elsewhere on Barra, Traigh Mhòr offers another distinctive coastal sight: the sands serve as the runway for the island’s airport.

About Wavecrest Campsite

Small campsite located on the west coast of Bara where you will find incredible sunsets, crystal clear waters and plenty to see nearby. The site is located on a rocky coast with a large flat grass area for campervans and tents, a white sandy beach with clear blue waters suitable for swimming is located 400m away. Dogs and all age groups are welcome with electrical hook up available. A rocky beach is located next to the site and if you’re hungry Joan’s Barra Pizza is located a short walk away. Barra is a small island with many white sand beaches, a 9-hole wild golf course and the world’s only commercial beach airport with daily flights from Glasgow (On a Sunday the terminal building turns into the local fish & chip shop, serving fresh catches of the day and beer which I highly recommend).
