Scurrival Campsite offers a small, laidback camping spot at the northern end of Barra, with an open-field setting and a semi-wild feel. Tents and campervans are welcome, as are dogs. The practical comforts are gathered in a renovated old house on the campsite, where campers have use of a toilet, shower, kitchen and communal room. The beach is around 100 metres away rather than directly beside the pitches, putting white sand within easy reach without losing the character of a simple field campsite. The season runs from 1 April to 31 October, with bookings arranged by telephone or through Facebook.

Beach walks are a natural focus here: the mile-long sands of Traigh Scurrival lead towards further stretches of coast and Traigh Mhor, Barra’s beach runway. This is a working airport, so access needs care: the runway beach is open to walkers only when the airport is closed and the windsocks are down. Scheduled flights use the tidal sands, with their timings governed by the tides.

For a more varied outing, the Eoligarry Explorer walking route starts near Eoligarry jetty and combines minor roads, rough hill pasture and beaches. It takes in Dun Sgurabhal’s ruined fort and the historic church site at Cille Bharra; dogs need to remain under close control across the grazing croftland. Cille Bharra also rewards a separate visit for its medieval church, chapels and carved grave markers, offering a different perspective on northern Barra beyond its beaches.

About Scurrival Campsite

Small laidback campsite located in the north of Barra in an open field where camping is possible with a semi-wild feel. Although the campsite is not located directly on the beach we have still given the site “beach status” due to only being 100m away. There is a toilet, shower, kitchen and hang out room available for campers to use in a recently renovated old house within the campsite. With plenty of excellent walks nearby and an abundance of beaches this is the perfect site if you are looking for a semi-wild feel but with modern facilities. From the campsite you can walk the mile-long white sandy beach, traigh Scurrival, which extends onwards to several other beaches and links to the famous Traigh Mhor Beach Runway (the only commercial beach runway in the world). Castlebay is a short drive away which has a ferry link to Oban. The town also has a pub, a co-op, Barra Gin Distillery & Barra sea kayaking tours and rentals. There are plenty of beaches around which are perfect for wild swimming with fires possible on the beach below the high tide mark (you must bring your own wood and kindling).
