Sango Sands Campsite

Clifftop pitches above sandy beaches give Sango Sands Campsite its distinctive coastal setting in Durness, on Scotland’s far north-west coast. On the North Coast 500, it suits travellers breaking their road trip as well as campers staying to explore the surrounding coastline. Sea views are a defining feature, with beach walks offering a reason to linger rather than simply move on to the next overnight stop.

The site welcomes tents, campervans and dogs, with toilets and showers among the practical facilities. Electric hook-up pitches require advance booking, while smaller non-electric pitches operate on a first-come, first-served basis. The Oasis restaurant and bar beside the campsite offers somewhere to eat or enjoy a dram overlooking the coast. This is a village campsite with beaches close at hand, rather than an isolated camping spot.

For exploring beyond Sango Bay, Smoo Cave is one of Durness’s notable geological sights: a walkway leads into its waterfall chamber, while tours venture further underground when water levels allow. To the west of Durness, Balnakeil offers a different coastal outing. The four-mile Faraid Head circuit begins at the car park beside the ruined church, crossing Balnakeil Beach before following tracks and paths through the dunes to cliff-top viewpoints towards Cape Wrath. Balnakeil Craft Village, housed in former RAF buildings on the road towards the beach, adds an alternative to a day spent entirely on the sand.
