Clachtoll Beach Campsite

Golden sand, dune walkways and the distinctive outline of Split Rock give Clachtoll Beach Campsite its coastal character. This quiet, family-run site in Sutherland welcomes tents, touring caravans and campervans, with serviced and unserviced pitches, toilets and showers. Dogs are welcome, campfires are permitted and booking is available online. Its position on the North Coast 500 makes it a coastal stop for those touring the north-west Highlands, while the beach gives visitors a reason to stay beyond a single night.

Swimming and snorkelling are among the main attractions here. Clachtoll features on the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s North West Highlands Snorkel Trail, offering a different way to explore the coast when sea conditions are suitable. Even in clear, shallow water, tides, currents and weather need careful consideration before entering the sea. For time ashore, the sand and surrounding rocky coastline offer an alternative to days spent on the road.

A rewarding local walk leads to Clachtoll Broch, an Iron Age drystone roundhouse standing on a rocky knoll above the shore. The coastal path is reached from Clachtoll Beach car park rather than a designated campsite trail; sturdy footwear is recommended. At the broch, a massive triangular stone lintel marks the entrance, with chambers and galleries contained within the thick walls. Lochinver, five miles south of the campsite, offers another option for an outing, with cafés, restaurants and local shops.
