Howmore Hostel Campsite

Howmore Hostel Campsite offers simple, semi-wild camping for small tents in the hostel grounds on South Uist. The open-field setting suits visitors who want to sleep under canvas while having access to indoor essentials: the camping fee covers use of the hostel facilities, including toilets and showers, and is charged per person rather than per tent. No advance booking is required; check in and pay at the hostel when you arrive. The campsite is open all year. Dogs are welcome in the camping area but are not permitted inside the hostel building.

The surrounding landscape is South Uist’s machair, the low-lying coastal ground that separates much of the island’s western shore from its inland lochs and hills. The beach is a short walk away, with Atlantic-facing sands extending north and south. An old machair track passes within half a mile of the hostel, offering another way to explore the coastal landscape on foot. For a different kind of outing, South Uist’s eastern hills include Beinn Mhòr, the island’s highest summit.

Howmore’s ruined churches and chapels give the immediate area a particular historical interest. Standing beside the hostel, this medieval religious complex includes the remains of churches dedicated to St Mary and St Columba, along with chapels and burial enclosures. It was an important ecclesiastical centre under the Lordship of the Isles, making it a worthwhile place to explore without travelling beyond the township.
