Inchcailloch Campsite

Inchcailloch Campsite offers tent-only, semi-wild camping on an uninhabited island in Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve. The small camping area lies at Port Bawn, on the island’s southern tip, beside a beach and woodland. Numbers are limited to 12 people per night, keeping the scale modest in this protected setting. Bookings can be made online for the summer camping season, and dogs are welcome. Access is by boat, with Balmaha one departure point, or by your own vessel.

Practical preparation matters here. There are public composting toilets, but no drinking-water supply, so bring enough water along with your food and camping equipment. All litter must leave with you. From the Balmaha ferry’s landing at the North Jetty, the walk to the campsite is approximately 1km, including steps; pack with carrying your kit in mind. Ferry luggage space is limited, and campers should arrange the crossing with the operator in advance rather than treating it as part of their campsite booking.

Exploring the island gives a stay its focus. The Low Path leads through woodland, with some slopes and steps, while the steeper Summit Path climbs to views across Loch Lomond and the surrounding mountains. The ruined church and old burial ground reveal another side of the island beyond its woods and shoreline. These walks can be combined or enjoyed separately, leaving time to explore the beach at Port Bawn without needing another boat journey.
