Salen Bay Campsite is a small, family-run site on elevated coastal ground on the Isle of Mull. Pitches on its upper tier have wide views across Salen Bay and the Sound of Mull towards Morvern and Ardnamurchan, with Mull’s central hills adding an inland backdrop. Grass and hardstanding pitches accommodate tents and campervans, with electric hook-up available on some pitches. Toilets, showers and washing-up facilities cover the practical essentials, and dogs are welcome.

Direct sea access is a distinctive feature, with kayaks and paddleboards available to hire and opportunities for wild swimming when conditions are suitable. There is also plenty to watch for around the grounds and shoreline, from orchids and cotton grass to oystercatchers and birds of prey, with otters among the wildlife that may be spotted. Salen village is a short walk away for groceries, cafés and a pub, so everyday supplies and meals need not always involve taking the vehicle out.

The village bus connection makes a day out in Tobermory an option. Mull’s main town has brightly painted waterfront buildings, shops and a harbour framed by wooded hills. For a different outing, Glen Aros offers a circular woodland walk and the historic graveyard of Cill an Ailean, once the site of a medieval chapel. A longer route heads towards Loch Frisa, giving walkers and cyclists an alternative to time spent on the coast. These are separate outings rather than routes starting at the campsite.

About Salen Bay Campsite

Small family run campsite with pitches on elevated ground on the upper tier of the site with stunning 360-degree views overlooking the Sound of Mull, Salen Bay and the picturesque coastline of Morvern, Ardnamurchan and the central ‘Mull massive’. There are a verity of hard standing and grass pitches, some with electrical hook-up and a modern toilet, shower and washing up unit available for campers use. The site has direct access to the sea with paddleboards and kayaks available to rent or if you fancy just going for a dip wild swimming is free. With an abundance of wildlife to keep your eye out for this is a great site for those looking to see some Bog cottons, Rare Orchids, Otters, Eagles, buzzards, Hen harriers, Oyster Catchers to name a few. The village of Salen is a short walk away where you will find a bus stop that runs from the ferry in the south to Tobermory in the North. Also in the village is the Salen Hotel with its beer garden, a Co-op, a couple of very nice coffee shops that serve home-made cakes and the outdoor food hut “the taste of Mull” where you can get your fish and chips fix. Day trip to Tobermory are possible using the bus service where you can spend the day exploring the town, drinking whisky at the distillery and make it back in time for a BBQ. For those looking for something a little different we recommend taking the 40-minute walk or short drive to Glenforsa Hotel which is a stunning log cabin hotel, restaurant and bar with its own private runway.
