Ardnamurchan Campsite

Ardnamurchan Campsite occupies a sloping coastal site west of Kilchoan, between ancient volcanic ground and the sea. Its 25 pitches are arranged on flat terraces, with nine just above the high-water mark on the foreshore. The outlook takes in Ben Hiant to the east, the Sound of Mull and the Isle of Mull, with the Atlantic beyond. Rock pools along the shoreline give the waterfront pitches a particularly close connection to the changing tide.

Tents and campervans are welcome, and there is also a camping pod for those travelling without their own accommodation. Toilets and showers provide the essentials, and dogs are accepted. Kilchoan House Hotel’s public bar is around a 30-minute walk away, offering an alternative to an evening at the pitch; the village also has a shop for provisions. This is a coastal campsite rather than a sandy-beach site, with Sanna providing a separate destination for a day on the sand.

Exploring western Ardnamurchan brings contrasting stretches of coast. Sanna Bay has pale sand, dunes and rocky headlands, while the coastal walk from Portuairk to Sanna offers views towards Ardnamurchan Point and the Small Isles. The walk starts in Portuairk, not at the campsite. Ardnamurchan Lighthouse is another worthwhile outing, reached by a single-track road that becomes steep and winding in places. Its headland setting and views across the Inner Hebrides make it a distinctive place to appreciate the peninsula’s exposed western edge.
