Calgary Beach Campsite

Calgary Beach Campsite is a small, semi-wild tent site just behind the white sands of Calgary Bay on Mull. Its appeal is straightforward: a coastal setting with basic facilities rather than a fully serviced campsite. There are separate male and female toilets, benches and several fire pits, with firewood available to buy at the entrance or bring yourself. Camping is free, with donations welcomed, and there is no advance booking. Dogs are welcome, and cars can park in the campsite car park.

Come prepared with food and camping essentials, as this is a remote spot. Sheep graze the camping grass, so a separate ground mat is useful for keeping droppings off your tent. The beach offers space for a wander, while swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding are possibilities when weather and sea conditions are suitable. Behind the bay lies machair, coastal grassland whose calcium-rich sandy soil supports a distinctive mixture of grasses and flowering plants.

There is more to explore around the bay than the sands alone. A path follows its northern side to the old stone pier, while the ruined township of Inevie stands on the hillside above. Calgary Art in Nature offers a contrasting woodland outing, with sculptures and carvings along paths linking the beach with the arts buildings uphill. Some woodland sections have steps, and paths can be muddy or slippery, making sturdy footwear worthwhile even for a relatively short exploration.
