Quick Read Campsite Summary

Tall pines shape the character of Rothiemurchus Camping Caravan Park, a small woodland site outside Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park. Tent pitches fit around the naturally growing trees rather than following a uniform layout, giving the camping area a semi-wild feel. Pitch allocation takes tent size into account, so bookings are handled by telephone or email rather than online; reserving ahead is advisable. There are also 17 sheltered, level pitches for caravans and campervans, all with electric hook-up. Toilets and hot showers add practical comforts without losing the forest setting. Dogs are permitted with caravans and campervans, but not in the tent area.

Walking and cycling are natural ways to explore Rothiemurchus, while local activities include archery, quad biking and fishing. Aviemore offers shops, pubs, restaurants and a railway station, with a dedicated walking and cycling path providing an alternative to the road. For a woodland outing, Loch an Eilein has a five-kilometre circuit through the pines, with views towards its ruined island castle. Red squirrels, Scottish crossbills and crested tits live in the surrounding forest, though sightings take patience and luck.

Loch Morlich offers a different landscape, combining a sandy beach with woodland and mountain views. Its 5.8-kilometre circuit follows mostly broad gravel paths, with some uneven or muddy sections and two road crossings. The shorter, 2.4-kilometre Beach Trail passes through pine, birch and alder woods beside the Allt Mor burn and the loch’s sands. These are separate outings rather than routes beginning at the campsite.

About Rothiemurchus Camping Caravan Park

Rothiemurchus campsite is a small but well positioned site where you can pitch up amongst the towering pine trees and take in the stunning surroundings. Because trees grow naturally every pitch is different so depending on your tent size will depend on the pitch you are assigned. Because of this online booking is not possible, instead you must email or phone ahead to secure your pitch (you can also just turn up but pre-booking is advisable). The site also has 17 sheltered level pitches for caravans and campervans all with electric hook up. Unfortunately, dogs are NOT permitted in the tent area but are permitted for campervans and caravans. There are plenty activities nearby with Rothiemurchus themselves offering quad biking, archery, fishing, bike hire and much much more. Further afield is Aviemore (45 min walk) with a train station, pub’s, shops and restaurants. In the opposite direction is Loch Morlich where wild swimming and water sports are possible (1 hour walk). If you are heading in either direction there is a dedicated cycling and walking path to keep you away from the very busy road. The campsite has a semi-wild camping feel to it but offers hot showers and a toilet block.
