Isle of Rum Bunkhouse Campsite

Isle of Rum Bunkhouse Campsite offers a semi-wild tent stay on one of Scotland’s Small Isles, with an open grass camping area and a few practical comforts. Reached on foot from the ferry terminal after the crossing from Mallaig, it suits visitors travelling without a car. There is an outdoor washing-up area, a shelter that doubles as an otter-watching hut, and solar-powered USB charging points. Toilets and showers are around 200 metres from the camping area; campers do not have access to the bunkhouse or its communal facilities.

Dogs are welcome, and glamping pods offer an alternative to bringing a tent. The island’s general store is a short walk away for provisions, including alcohol. With belongings carried from the ferry and facilities separate from the pitches, this is a simple island camping experience rather than a conventional touring park.

Beyond the campsite, Rum’s landscapes range from wooded glens to rugged volcanic mountains. Nature trails follow the southern side of Loch Scresort and pass through Kinloch Glen, while tracks lead farther across the island towards Kilmory and Harris. Kinloch Castle can be viewed from the track outside, although its interior is closed to visitors. Rum also supports golden and white-tailed eagles, red deer and breeding Manx shearwaters, making wildlife watching a rewarding focus for a stay. After dark, the island’s International Dark Sky Sanctuary status adds another reason to spend time outdoors when skies are clear.
