Cleadale Campsite (Eigg Organics)

Cleadale Campsite (Eigg Organics) offers small-scale, semi-wild camping on a working croft on the Isle of Eigg, one of the Small Isles in the Inner Hebrides. Campers choose their own spot in an open field, with views west across the Atlantic towards Rum and the Outer Hebrides. The outlook makes sunset a particular attraction, although the weather naturally has the final say. Facilities include a composting toilet, flushing toilet, shower and washing-up sink, with drinking water drawn from the croft’s well. Free-roaming livestock are part of the setting, so dogs are not permitted. Booking is by email.

Reaching the campsite is part of the practical planning: it lies on the other side of the island from the ferry landing, approximately 3.7 miles away on foot. Pack with that walk in mind, especially if carrying a tent and provisions.

For exploring Cleadale’s coast, the Singing Sands walk begins at the end of the lower road rather than at the campsite. It crosses croftland before descending steep steps to the beach, where dry sand can squeak beneath your feet. Allow around half an hour from the road, and take care around grazing livestock and ground-nesting birds. Laig Bay offers a different stretch of shoreline, with white sand backed by grassy dunes. The sandstone cliffs between these two bays reveal another side of Eigg’s landscape, contrasting with the basalt cliffs behind Cleadale.
