Canna Campsite

Reaching Canna Campsite involves a ferry crossing from Mallaig to one of Scotland’s Small Isles, followed by a walk from the pier. This is a semi-wild island campsite with tent pitches and glamping pods, offering a choice between bringing your own shelter and staying under a solid roof. Exploring on foot brings together beaches, farmland and a surprisingly varied island history. Sanday, connected to Canna by a bridge, has a white-sand beach a short walk from the campsite. The Canna Bay walk begins at the pier and follows the shore past the community shop, churches and small green post office before crossing to Sanday. It gives a useful introduction to the two islands without committing to the more exposed coastal routes.

For wider views, the Compass Hill walk also starts at the pier and climbs towards heathland overlooking Canna, Rum and Skye. Birdwatchers can follow the Puffin Trail from St Edward’s Church on Sanday towards sea stacks used by a seasonal puffin colony; nesting birds should be given plenty of space. For a different emphasis, the A’Chill route starts at St Columba’s Chapel and visits an early settlement site with an intricately carved Christian cross, passing through woodland and farmland along the way.
