John O’Groats Caravan and Camping Site occupies an open coastal setting in the village, with seafront pitches looking across the Pentland Firth towards Orkney. Its position on the North Coast 500 makes it a practical overnight stop, although the coastal walks and sights of Caithness give good reasons to stay longer. The village’s pub, restaurant, brewery, shops and craft centre are a short walk away, so there are options for eating out and picking up essentials without moving your vehicle. A sandy beach lies a short walk east of the campsite. This is an exposed stretch of coast, however, and northerly winds can make a beach stroll feel distinctly bracing.

For a longer outing on foot, the coastal path from John O’Groats harbour leads east past Roberts Haven and Sannick Bay towards Duncansby Head lighthouse and the pointed sea stacks beyond. The route combines sandy bays with clifftop scenery; breeding seabirds add interest in season. Further exploration of Caithness could take in the Castle of Mey, bought and restored by the Queen Mother in the 1950s, or the clifftop ruins of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe near Wick.
