Ferry View Night Stop

Ferry View Night Stop is a small, family-run eco campsite between Thurso and John o’ Groats, welcoming campervans and tents on the northern stretch of the North Coast 500. Open all year, it offers both hardstanding and grass pitches, with electric hook-up available at every pitch. Dogs are welcome and campfires are permitted. Shared toilets, showers and laundry facilities cover the practicalities, while Mr Eddy’s Pit Stop serves homemade food on site. Online booking is available.

The Orkney ferry terminal is within walking distance, making the campsite a useful stop before a crossing or for a stay combining Caithness with an island excursion. Pentland Ferries sails from Gills Bay to St Margaret’s Hope on South Ronaldsay, with the crossing taking just over an hour. Travelling with a vehicle allows you to continue across the Churchill Barriers towards mainland Orkney, passing the Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm along the way. Day trips are possible, subject to sailing schedules and onward transport arrangements.

Back on the Scottish mainland, Dunnet Beach and John o’ Groats are options for exploring the surrounding area. For a coastal walk, head to John o’ Groats harbour rather than setting out from the campsite: a path follows the shore east through sandy bays towards Duncansby Head lighthouse and the prominent Stacks of Duncansby. The route combines shoreline walking with clifftop scenery, offering a different perspective on this well-known corner of Caithness.
