Eviedale Cottages And Campsite is a small site in the north of Orkney’s Mainland, overlooking Eynhallow Sound towards Rousay. The sandy shore of Aikerness Bay is close by, giving beach walks a natural place in a stay here. Grass and hardstanding pitches accommodate tents and campervans, while a bell tent offers an alternative to bringing your own camping equipment. Toilets and showers are available, and dogs are welcome.

The on-site bistro and bakehouse give Eviedale a character beyond its pitches. Wood-fired sourdough pizza, freshly baked sourdough bread and artisan coffee are part of the offering, with a multi-fuel stove bringing warmth to the indoor space on colder, rainy days. For visitors dividing their time between the shore and Orkney’s archaeological sites, having food available on site is a distinctive part of the campsite’s appeal.

At Aikerness, the Broch of Gurness adds an Iron Age dimension to exploring the coast. Its surviving stone houses, yards and sheds grew around a central broch tower, revealing the layout of a substantial settlement. Gurness is also the starting point for the Evie-to-Birsay stage of the St Magnus Way. This is a demanding coastal outing rather than a gentle beach stroll: the route includes rough ground, exposed clifftops and steep sections around Costa Hill and Whitaloo Point.
