Point of Ness Campsite

Point of Ness Campsite occupies a quiet shoreline setting on the edge of Stromness, with views across to the hills of Hoy. Around a mile west of the pierhead and ferry terminal, this small, council-run site combines coastal surroundings with access on foot to the town’s pubs and restaurants. Its 42 pitches sit on level, firm grass suitable for tents and campervans, with electric hook-ups on 28 pitches. A communal block provides toilets, showers and washing facilities. Dogs are welcome, and bookings can be made online. The season runs from 1 April to 30 September.

There is a shoreline walk from the site, while the coastal path past Point of Ness continues towards Warebeth beach, looking across the water towards Hoy. Stromness itself rewards an unhurried wander through its winding, flagstoned streets and narrow closes. The town’s maritime connections are explored at Stromness Museum, whose collections cover seafaring and natural history, while the Pier Arts Centre houses modern and contemporary art, including works by Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson.

For an excursion beyond town, the Ring of Brodgar offers a striking introduction to Orkney’s prehistoric landscape. This ceremonial stone circle dates from the third millennium BC and forms part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, alongside Skara Brae, Maeshowe and the Stones of Stenness. Its setting among hills and lochs provides a different perspective on Mainland from the campsite’s sea-facing outlook.
