Birsay Outdoor Centre Campsite

Birsay Outdoor Centre Campsite is a small council-run site in rural northwest Mainland Orkney, around a ten-minute walk from Birsay village and its small shop. Its 28 firm, level grass pitches accommodate tents, caravans and motorhomes, with electrical hook-ups on 13 pitches. The shower and toilet block also houses washing facilities, a kettle and a washing-up area. Dogs are welcome, and booking is available online. With an opening season from 1 April to 30 September, it suits campers planning a spring or summer stay exploring the West Mainland’s archaeology and coastline.

The nearby Brough of Birsay brings several layers of island history together: Pictish, Norse and medieval remains occupy this tidal island, with the outlines of Norse buildings and the remains of St Peter’s Church among the features to explore. Beyond the settlement, a walk leads to the lighthouse above the Atlantic cliffs. Access is across a causeway only exposed at low tide, so checking crossing times is an essential part of planning a visit.

For coastal walking, Marwick Head’s RSPB reserve has a path from the bay up to the Kitchener Memorial, overlooking cliffs used by nesting seabirds. The grassy ascent includes steep sections and can be slippery when wet. Inland, the St Magnus Way offers a different perspective on Orkney: its Birsay-to-Dounby stage starts at St Magnus Kirk in the village and follows roads and tracks through farmland over 10.2 miles, rather than setting off from the campsite itself.
