Chalmersquoy Campsite

Chalmersquoy Campsite is a small site on Westray, one of Orkney’s northern islands, with two paddocks behind the original farm building. Hardstanding pitches cater for campervans, with electric hook-up available, while tents have a grass area. Facilities include a toilet, shower, kitchen and cleaning facilities, and dogs are welcome. The campsite opens year-round, with bookings handled by email.

The site sits on the edge of Pierowall, Westray’s main village, within walking distance of shops and the heritage centre. This makes it useful for combining island exploration with everyday supplies. At Westray Heritage Centre, displays trace the island’s archaeology and history, including the Westray Wife, a small Neolithic human figurine discovered at Links of Noltland. Ferries connect Kirkwall with Westray, so the crossing needs to be factored into arrival and departure plans.

For a coastal outing elsewhere on the island, the 7.4km Noup Head Circular starts at the small car park before Backarass farm. It follows coastal heath and rough grazing towards the lighthouse, passing sea cliffs, rock arches and seabird colonies before returning by track and road. Some stretches use narrow cliff-edge paths, making this a walk that needs care rather than a casual beach stroll. Late spring and early summer also bring opportunities to look for puffins at the Castle of Burrian, a separate coastal destination on Westray.
