Ythan Valley Campsite

Ythan Valley Campsite is a small, family-run retreat for tent campers in rural Aberdeenshire, in the Ellon area. Its open-field setting and semi-wild character suit visitors who enjoy straightforward camping, while toilets and showers provide practical comforts. Food is a distinctive part of the stay: fresh bread and eggs from the local farm shop can be ordered for arrival, and a cooked breakfast can be delivered to your tent in the morning. The camping season runs from 1 March to 30 September, with bookings handled by phone or email.

For a day exploring the area, Haddo Country Park offers walks through historic parkland, with ornamental lakes, tree-lined avenues and decorative landmarks. The long, straight Scots Mile is one of its defining features, while the Golden Gates were created as an ornament rather than an entrance. There is also an adventure playground, making the park an option for families as well as walkers.

The coast brings a different landscape at Forvie National Nature Reserve, where dunes, heathland and the Ythan estuary support varied birdlife. The Dune Trail starts at Waterside car park and explores the estuary, dunes and beach; alternative trails begin at the visitor centre near Collieston. Follow local signs and seasonal diversions, as the southern breeding area closes from April to August to protect nesting birds. For seal watching, the recommended viewpoint is across the estuary from Newburgh beach, keeping well away from the haul-out itself.
