Kneep Campsite Uig

Kneep Campsite Uig sits on grassy dunes beside the broad white sands of Traigh na Beirigh on the Isle of Lewis. Community-owned and semi-wild in character, it welcomes tents and campervans, with the beach central to its appeal: room for shoreline walks, sandcastle building and beach games, alongside turquoise water. It is one of two campsites run by the Uig Community, the other being at Ardroil Sands further down the coast.

Facilities include toilets, showers and a kitchen unit, with electrical hook-up available on 12 pitches. Dogs are welcome, and online booking is available. The combination of a dune setting and practical facilities suits visitors who want a straightforward coastal camping stay without doing entirely without everyday comforts.

The surrounding beach landscape rewards a closer look. Traigh na Beirigh, also known as Reef Beach, is backed by machair where wildflowers and orchids grow in summer; at its eastern end lies the smaller shell beach of Traigh Theinish. Cliff Beach offers another stretch of coast to explore on the Valtos peninsula, with quartz sand contrasting with the shell sands found elsewhere locally. For a change from beach days, the wider Uig district includes Abhainn Dearg Distillery and Ardroil, associated with the discovery of the Lewis Chessmen and marked by a large wooden chess-piece sculpture beside the road to the shore.
