Eilean Fraoich Camp Site

Eilean Fraoich Camp Site is a small, open-field campsite near Shawbost on the north-west coast of Lewis, welcoming tents, campervans and caravans. Dogs are welcome, and facilities include toilets, showers, washing facilities and a kitchen. Its position on the Hebridean Way makes it an option for those travelling the island route as well as visitors spending longer exploring western Lewis. The season runs from 1 April to 30 September, with online booking available.

Shawbost’s shore and its adjacent freshwater loch are about a mile from the campsite, giving visitors a coastal outing separate from the camping field itself. The village sits within a crofting landscape, with Beinn Bhragair rising inland. For a walk with a historical focus, Shawbost’s Norse Mill and Kiln are reached along a path from their own car park. These reconstructed, thatched stone buildings illustrate how barley was processed into meal, offering a tangible introduction to the practical work that once sustained island communities.

Another rewarding excursion is the Blackhouse at Arnol, where a furnished, thatched dwelling preserves the arrangement of a home that sheltered both a family and its livestock beneath one roof. Box-beds, the central peat hearth and the adjoining byre reveal how the building was used. The contrasting 1920s white house shows the shift towards separating domestic accommodation from animals, making the two buildings particularly interesting to see together.
