Ardroil Sands Campsite (Uig beach)

Ardroil Sands Campsite (Uig beach) is a community-run, semi-wild site set among the dunes beside the broad white sands of Uig Bay on the Isle of Lewis. An extensive grass area accommodates tents and campervans, with toilets and car parking keeping the practical arrangements simple. Dogs are welcome. Pitches cannot be reserved: the site operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with payment through an honesty box. Its character is closer to informal beach camping than a fully serviced holiday park.

The beach is the main reason to linger, with a vast expanse of relatively flat sand exposed at low tide. Beach walks need little planning, though the water can retreat a considerable way across the bay. There is history here, too: the Lewis Chessmen were discovered around Uig Sands in 1831, and a large wooden chessman beside the road to the shore marks that connection. For a different perspective on the landscape, the road end at Crowlista provides a panoramic viewpoint across the bay, while the Uig hills rise to the south.

Local outings include the white sands at Carnish and Abhainn Dearg Distillery, also in Carnish. Uig Sands Restaurant offers a change from campsite cooking, specialising in fish and shellfish with views across the bay; advance restaurant booking is recommended. These are separate local businesses rather than campsite facilities, so it is worth checking their opening arrangements when planning a visit.
