Sunart Camping

Sunart Camping is a small, family-run site within walking distance of Strontian village on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Its modest scale is reflected in the accommodation: ten hardstanding campervan pitches, eight pitches for small tents and three glamping pods. Campers have access to toilets, showers and a washing-up block, and dogs are welcome. The village puts everyday supplies and meals within reach on foot, with a well-stocked shop, Café Sunart and The Strontian Hotel & Pub.

Loch Sunart is around a 30-minute walk from the campsite, while Ardnastang beach is about a mile away. Electric bike hire is available at the site, and the owners can help arrange boat, canoe and kayak trips. These offer different ways to explore the surrounding area alongside days spent walking. For a whisky-focused outing, Ardnamurchan Distillery at Glenbeg runs guided tours covering its production process and has a visitor centre selling its single malts.

Ariundle Oakwood National Nature Reserve, three kilometres north of Strontian, is a particularly distinctive place to explore on foot. Its ancient Atlantic oakwood supports mosses, lichens and liverworts, with trails through the trees and beside the Strontian River. A woodland route passes a ruined croft, while surviving charcoal-burning platforms recall the woods’ industrial past. Although the reserve’s main track is wide and level, other paths can be wet, stony and steep in places, making sturdy footwear useful. These are walks to explore from the reserve’s own access points, rather than routes starting at the campsite.
