Portmahomack Caravan Site

Portmahomack Caravan Site is a small, community-run campsite beside a golden sandy bay on the edge of the village. Its open, flat grass area accommodates tents and campervans without designated pitches, giving it a simple, informal character. Direct beach access makes the shore a central part of a stay, whether for beach walks or time by the water. Portmahomack sits on the Dornoch Firth, on the Tarbat peninsula in Easter Ross.

Facilities include toilets, showers available for a fee, a laundry and a dishwashing area. Electrical hook-up is available on request, and dogs are welcome. Village pubs, restaurants and a café are a short walk away, while Tain and Alness offer larger food shops further afield. The campsite opens from 1 April to 31 October, with bookings handled directly by email rather than through an online booking system.

There is local history to explore at Tarbat Discovery Centre, around 200 metres from the campsite. Housed in the old parish church, the museum tells the story of the peninsula’s Pictish monastic settlement through archaeological finds, including carved stones. For a longer outing on foot, the Tarbat Ness coastal circuit links Portmahomack and Rockfield, passing the lighthouse and offering opportunities to watch for seabirds, seals and dolphins. Designed by Robert Stevenson and first lit in 1830, the lighthouse is a distinctive landmark, though its interior is not open to the public.
