Pillars of Hercules Campsite

Pillars of Hercules Campsite at Falkland is a small, quiet, family-friendly site with a straightforward approach to camping: space for tents, room for children to play and somewhere to light a fire. The Bankings Field allows campers to park beside their tents, while a few spaces cater for campervans. Toilets, showers and a washhouse for washing-up cover the essentials, and dogs are welcome. The on-site café and farm shop, offering vegetarian food, are a distinctive part of the place.

Online booking is available for tent campers and campervans. Touring cyclists and backpackers carrying their own equipment have a separate camping area and can arrive without booking ahead. This makes the site useful both for a settled camping break and for travellers passing through under their own steam.

Falkland Estate gives visitors plenty to explore on foot, with woodland paths, historic features and routes climbing towards East Lomond. The Maspie Den walk starts at Pillars of Hercules and passes the estate stables before heading into the den; look out for the Yad waterfall and the ornate chimneys of the House of Falkland. There are steep sections and steps, so it is worth choosing footwear accordingly. In Falkland village, the Renaissance palace and its gardens offer a contrasting outing, with royal history closely associated with Mary, Queen of Scots.
