Lickisto Blackhouse Camping And Yurts

Lickisto Blackhouse Camping and Yurts is a small, semi-wild site on the rugged east coast of Harris, with 11 pitches accommodating tents and campervans, alongside glamping accommodation. The tent camping area occupies a wooded valley without vehicle access: wheelbarrows are available to help move your kit from the car. This arrangement is worth bearing in mind when packing, particularly if you normally keep much of your camping equipment in your vehicle.

Toilets are available, dogs are welcome and campfires are permitted. Most tent pitches accommodate two to four people, and the uneven landscape limits space for larger tents, with a maximum tent size of 3m by 7m. Tent pitches must be booked by telephone rather than online. For visitors travelling without their own tent, the glamping accommodation offers another way to stay while retaining the site’s informal character.

Exploring South Harris reveals a marked contrast between its two coasts. Luskentyre and Scarista offer broad sands and views towards Taransay, while the east coast’s Golden Road winds through small communities among rocky bays and sea inlets. Harris Tweed outlets and galleries add reasons to stop along the way. Walkers can explore the Tarbert-to-Seilebost section of the Hebridean Way, which combines old paths, minor roads and an historic coffin route; some stretches are indistinct and very boggy, so it deserves proper preparation rather than being treated as a casual beach stroll. In Tarbert, the Isle of Harris Distillery offers guided experiences exploring its gin and single malt whisky production.
