Sandy grass gives way to the beach at Horgabost Camping And Wild Camping, a large, semi-wild site on the Isle of Harris. The beach is central to a stay here, whether you spend your time walking along the sand, playing ball games or taking to the water when conditions suit. Clear water makes this an appealing spot for wild swimming and watersports, though activities need to be judged against the weather and sea conditions. Beach campfires are permitted, but you must bring your own wood. When the weather co-operates, sunset is another reason to linger by the shore.

For more demanding walking, the Hebridean Way passes through Horgabost township, with the campsite reached by leaving the trail and following the township road. This stretch crosses wet moorland and rocky hillsides, so it is a different proposition from a beach stroll. Its coastal outlook takes in Taransay and the North Harris mountains. A separate outing to Tarbert brings you to the Isle of Harris Distillery, where visitor experiences explore the island’s gin and whisky, including the use of locally harvested sugar kelp in the gin.
