Burravoe Pier Trust Campsite

Burravoe Pier Trust Campsite is a small, community-run site beside the pier on Yell, with eight touring pitches and four tent pitches. Its most distinctive feature is the amenity building: the roof is made from a lifeboat from the SS Canberra. Inside are toilets, showers and a kitchen. Dogs are welcome, the campsite opens all year, and bookings are taken by phone or email. The pier-side setting gives the place a working maritime character, with local fishing boats coming and going.

A short walk brings you to the Old Haa Museum, housed in a former merchant’s house dating from 1672. Its local-history displays and art gallery offer an introduction to Yell beyond the shoreline, while the seasonal tearoom serves coffee and homemade cakes. Check opening dates before planning a visit, particularly outside summer; the museum garden is open year-round.

For a walk from the pier and marina, the five-kilometre Ladies Hol and Heoganess circuit follows the voe before climbing towards the cliffs and rounding the ness. Allow around two hours; the route is graded moderate and ground can be boggy even in summer. The coast offers chances to look for otters and seals, with nesting seabirds adding interest during the breeding season, though sightings are never certain. Exploring farther across Yell brings sandy shores at West Sandwick and the Sands of Breckon into the itinerary. Access to the island is by ferry from Toft on Shetland Mainland to Ulsta.
