Skeld Caravan Site
Quick Read Campsite Summary
Skeld Caravan Site is a small coastal campsite on the west side of Mainland Shetland, beside the village’s marina and waterfront. Its setting places visitors among the sea inlets, crofting settlements and rugged outer coastline of Shetland’s Westside. Hardstanding pitches cater for campervans, with a grass area for tents, and dogs are welcome. Practical facilities include toilets, showers, washing and cooking facilities; bring £1 coins for the shower. Local fishermen often land crabs, lobsters and scallops at the pier, with opportunities to buy fresh shellfish depending on the catch.
Birdwatching and coastal exploration are natural interests here. A wildlife hide overlooks the voe, where seals and birds may be seen, although sightings are never guaranteed. For an outing along the coast, Reawick has a distinctive pink-sand beach, while Westerwick and Culswick have pebble bays framed by cliffs and sea stacks. These are separate places to explore rather than beaches at the campsite.
At Culswick, a walking route begins near the end of the village road and follows a track past the Methodist chapel towards Culswick Broch. The ruined stone tower stands above the coast, with its massive triangular lintel still visible. The route also passes old plant shelters and kale yards, adding traces of former crofting life to the walk. Parts of the track can be wet and muddy, so suitable footwear is worthwhile even when setting out in dry weather.
