Pondside Camping

Pondside Camping is a small, laid-back site in the Lairg area, with around three acres of open camping ground and views over Loch Shin and the surrounding countryside. It welcomes tents and campervans, with space and a straightforward camping atmosphere at the heart of its character. Practical facilities include a toilet and shower block, while a communal barbecue area gives campers somewhere to cook outdoors. Dogs are welcome, and bookings are handled by phone or email.

For walks during your stay, Ferrycroft in Lairg offers a choice of woodland, lochside and archaeological routes. The one-mile Lochside Trail passes through Ferry Wood’s pines to ponds and the shore of Little Loch Shin, with picnic benches along the way. The longer Broch Trail takes in the remains of a roughly 2,000-year-old broch and views towards the Shin dam. For a more demanding outing, the 1¾-mile Ord Hill Trail follows rougher, steeper ground past hut circles and burial cairns, with views across Lairg and Loch Shin. These routes start at Ferrycroft rather than at the campsite.

The Falls of Shin offers another distinct outing in the area, combining a waterfall viewpoint with trails through mixed woodland and along the rocky banks of the River Shin. Together, these places give visitors reasons to spend time exploring around Lairg, whether Pondside is an overnight stop during a Highland road trip or somewhere to stay for several nights.
