Hillend Camping Ayrshire

Hillend Camping Ayrshire is a small, woodland-ringed campsite near Auchinleck, with a spacious open field and a relaxed, semi-wild character. Tents of all sizes and small campervans are welcome, and campers can choose where to pitch within the field rather than being confined to allocated spaces. The emphasis is on straightforward camping: room to settle in, informal surroundings and evenings around a fire. Raised fire pits and off-the-ground barbecues are permitted.

Toilets and showers add practical comforts without changing the site’s back-to-basics feel, and dogs are welcome. Although the setting feels removed from village life, Auchinleck is around a 30-minute walk away, with shops, a pub, a restaurant and a railway station. Online booking is available. The campsite welcomes campervans throughout the year, while tent camping is restricted to summer.

For an outing, Dumfries House near Cumnock has woodland paths, an arboretum, gardens and bridges across the Lugar Water. Its grounds are open daily from dawn until dusk; visiting the house itself requires a booked guided tour or event. Walkers can also explore the route from the west end of Auchinleck towards the River Ayr Way, passing the Barony A-Frame and continuing through Auchinleck Estate. This is a separate excursion rather than a campsite trail, and its mixture of roadside sections and estate tracks means allowing for road traffic and farm vehicles.
