Glentrool Camping & Caravan Site

Glentrool Camping & Caravan Site at Bargrennan combines a peaceful forest-edge setting with practical comforts for walkers, cyclists and touring visitors. Grass tent pitches range from backpacker spaces to larger pitches, alongside touring caravan and motorhome spaces, with optional electric hook-ups. Heated toilets and showers, a baby-changing washroom, laundry and dishwashing facilities cover the essentials. The communal bothy has a kettle, fridge and freezer, while free WiFi, a motorhome service area and dog- and bike-wash points add useful touches. Dogs are welcome, and the Southern Upland Way passes within a few hundred yards of the site.

Exploring Glentrool need not mean heading straight for the hills. The Two Waters Trail follows the Waters of Minnoch and Trool through birch woodland on a 2¼-mile circuit. For a longer outing, the 5¾-mile Loch Trool Loop starts at Caldons car park and passes through native oakwoods; its steeply rolling terrain makes it more demanding than a gentle lochside stroll. Merrick, southern Scotland’s highest peak, offers a more substantial hillwalking objective for well-prepared visitors, while the 7stanes centre at Glentrool adds mountain-biking options.

Galloway Forest Park was the UK’s first Dark Sky Park, making clear nights a reason to linger outdoors after sunset. Wildlife watching also rewards a quieter pace: the woods around Glentrool’s visitor centre support red squirrels, roe deer and birds including goldcrests and crossbills, though sightings are never guaranteed.
