Balranald Campsite

Balranald Campsite is a small, family-run site beside a white sandy beach on North Uist’s west coast. It welcomes tents and campervans, with 19 hardstanding pitches and 11 grass pitches with electric hook-up, plus six grass pitches without electricity. Dogs are welcome, and glamping pods offer an alternative to bringing your own camping accommodation. The coastal setting lends itself to beach walks, with kayaking and canoeing among the activities possible for visitors bringing their own equipment.

A heated amenity block provides toilets, showers, a drying room and washing machine, alongside a dishwashing area, campers’ fridge and microwave. Wi-Fi is also available. These practical facilities make it easier to manage wet clothing and everyday camping chores during an island stay, while the choice of grass and hardstanding pitches suits different camping arrangements. For exploring the local landscape, Balranald nature reserve combines sandy shores, rocky foreshore, dunes and flower-rich grassland. It is particularly important for corncrakes, with traditional crofting practices helping to maintain their breeding habitat; lapwings, oystercatchers and ringed plovers also breed here. A waymarked circular walk starts at the reserve’s visitor centre and rounds the Aird an Runair peninsula, North Uist’s westernmost point. The route crosses tracks and grassland, includes rougher sections and follows a stretch of beach, offering a closer look at the island’s coastal habitats rather than simply another roadside viewpoint.
